Letchworth member, Nick Eaton, records rare Albatross on St Patrick’s Links, Rosapenna
Time to celebrate one of the rarest achievements in golf – an albatross – recorded on the 13th September on the 6th hole (par 5) at St Patrick’s Links, Rosapenna Golf Resort, Donegal.
During his round Letchworth member, Nick Eaton struck a 2-iron from the tee to position just short of the rough separating the two fairways. Facing 292 yards to the flag, he opted for a bold shot: a driver off the deck. The ball tracked directly towards the pin, and although it initially appeared to have run through the back of the green, it was discovered moments later in the hole by playing partner Chris Powell.
This remarkable “albatross 2” places Eaton in exclusive golfing company. Albatrosses are estimated to occur only once in every 6 million shots, making them even rarer than a hole-in-one. They have provided some of the game’s most historic moments, including Louis Oosthuizen’s at Augusta National during the 2012 Masters and Gene Sarazen’s famous “shot heard ’round the world” in the 1935 Masters.
Speaking after his round, Eaton reflected on the achievement:
“It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments you dream about. To have it happen on such a spectacular hole at St Patrick’s Links makes it even more special. I think driver off the deck is my new favourite shot!”
A huge congratulations to Nick Eaton on this extraordinary accomplishment, which now becomes a part of St Patrick’s Links’ own growing legend.
