Letchworth Golf Club

Mens' Golf

Men’s golf at Letchworth is as varied and as active as you want it to be. There are regular competitions, and medal rounds are played every month, either on a Sunday morning or mid-week on a Wednesday. Competitions are currently entered via a similar sheet in the Club lobby but there are plans to develop a sign up facility on the Club’s web site very soon.

Our scratch team were promoted last season with the highest ever number of match wins the last of which was won 12 – 0. The team contains a blend of youth and experience with a number of players representing Hertfordshire at County matches.

In addition to the Scratch League the Club plays a number of friendly matches both home and away against other leading clubs in the region. These are very popular and represent a great opportunity to play other courses at exceptional value and with good food to follow. Our policy is to ensure that everyone who wants to participate in these matches gets an equal opportunity to play.

A major benefit of golf at Letchworth is the ease of access to the course. Unlike many clubs there is no need to book a tee time, and a two tee start for single players and two balls from one tee and three and four balls from the other means that congested tees are generally avoided.

Seniors' Section

Letchworth Golf Club contains a very active Seniors' section open to all members over the age of 55. Regular fixtures take place against other clubs which, whilst being competitive, are played in an extremely friendly and jovial environment.

Senior Scratch Team Update

The second half of the season got underway with the home fixture against Verulam which which we halved. The away match versus Old Fold Manor was lost with only one pair gaining a halibut worst was to come after beating Harpenden 4-2 and East Herts 6-0 the other two contenders for the title we lost at Knebworth 6-0 though two matches got to the eighteenth.

The end game was that Letchworth were second by a solitary point to Harpenden. So congratulations to Harpenden and well done to our team members Mike Slattery, Mike Harcourt,Ian Kennon, whom only missed one match. Martyn Seaholme, Paul Bellamy, Nick Brookes,Craig Cameron and Malcolm Plumbley appearing in five matches. The other playing Members Paul Shadbolt, Dick Mitchell,Frank Bryder and Mike Slatter, all added to a successful season.

Mid Term Report

We arrive in mid-June with half of our matches completed. Of the five games played, we have won four and lost one, again to the old enemy Harpenden Golf Club, which means the victories have come against Verulam, Old Fold Manor, Knebworth, and East Herts. All were very close and well contested matches.

We have used twelve players. So far only Mike Harcourt has played in all five, and Mike Slatter, Frank Bryder, and Dick Mitchell have only played once.

Mike Slattery, who has played four games, remains unbeaten, as do Nick Brookes, Paul Bellamy, Dick Mitchell, & Malcolm Plumbley.

All this means that we are top of the league with twenty points. East Herts are second on seventeen, and  Harpenden third on fifteen but with a game in hand.

With three of the remaining games at home we hope we will be able to maintain our form and at least avoid relegation!!

Malcolm Plumbley
