Welcome to the website of Letchworth Golf Club, located in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire the worlds first garden city. The Club welcomes all who visit this web site be they members, visitors or societies.
Letchworth Golf Course was originally constructed over nine holes in 1905 and extended to full eighteen holes in 1911 by the famous professional Harry Vardon. Always picturesque, well maintained and a good challenge the course was rather short on length by today’s standards. So in 1999 the club acquired some new land and embarked on a major course extension; this was completed in 2003 and has enabled Letchworth to maintain its place as one of Hertfordshire’s leading golf courses. Take a tour of the course through the Course Guide.
The Golf Club is probably the oldest sporting organisation in the Garden City. It is a major town asset in terms of its contribution to the sporting and social life of its residents. With a total membership at over 900, it has the largest sporting membership in the town. The Club is predominantly a local resource, the majority of its members being drawn from Letchworth or its immediate surrounds.
Letchworth is proud to have one of the largest and most active ladies and junior membership in Hertfordshire; despite this the club continues to actively seek new members, in all classes, to its ranks. The Club is very conscious of its community role and in promoting golf in general and junior golf in particular. Excellent coaching, competitions of all types and matches against other clubs in the district together with a welcoming atmosphere are all part of the clubs life.
Today the course and practice area stands on 129 acres of outstanding countryside. It is widely acknowledged as one of the best-maintained and presented courses in the County and in addition to its golfing quality care is taken to preserve and enhance its ecological and environmental features. A close relationship has been established with the Countryside Commission. There are three calcareous areas, specifically for the benefit of flora and fauna, and many nesting boxes have been installed to protect the indigenous bird population.
For its Centenary year, Letchworth Golf Club has been selected, for the first time, to host both the Ladies and the Men’s County Championships. This is a great honour for the Town and for the Club and will be the golfing highlight of the year.
The Golf Club is available to all who play golf through the week by prior arrangement. As well as its members, many individuals, groups and societies visit Letchworth as “visitors” on a day membership to play golf and to enjoy refreshment in the clubhouse. Although this has to be limited at Weekends and Bank Holidays visiting players may still come to the club to play the par three course or the main course with a member.
In addition to its contribution to the sport of golf in Letchworth, the Club is a major social centre for its members and their friends. Many forms of social function are organised in the afternoons and evenings – bridge, whist, quizzes, dances, charity events and special dinners. These events attract a diverse age group and this is most beneficial to harmony in the club particularly to older members as they gradually play less golf. We hope this short overview will give you some background on the Club and the part it plays in our Town and we look forward to you visiting us.
